AquaTech Swim School believes that our year round swim lesson program is key to each child’s safety, success and well-being. Children that keep regular lessons year round demonstrate these benefits to our staff, their families and themselves.

Benefits:

Studies show that year-round swimmers retain a healthy respect for the water and build skills way beyond those of seasonal swimmers. Drowning is not only a summer danger and we believe steps towards prevention should continually be practiced. Studies also show children who swim consistently were significantly stronger and more coordinated that children who do not. Swimming children also score higher for intelligence and problem solving, which carries over into excellence and alertness in school. Emotionally, children who swim year-round were found to be more self-disciplined and to have motivation and confidence to succeed. From consistent goal setting, learning, and achievement, they rate highest in self-respect.

The School Day and Swimming:

School involves sitting still and mental activity. Young bodies need a fun outlet to vent their energy. Being cooped up in school all winter can lead to lethargy. Swimming invigorates like no other exercise. It works all muscles in the body evenly on both sides and is both aerobic and strength building. Children who are accustomed to healthy exercise grow into adults who are healthy. In addition to all the benefits already mentioned, swimming is just about the only sport we can enjoy well into our senior years. A lifelong pleasure, swimming is also important for many related water activities such as diving, fishing, and boating. And once again, remembering the safety of our children, swimming is the ONLY sport likely to save their lives someday. So stick with us, swim all year-round and reap the benefits!

Swimming, Cold Weather and Sickness:

Children who swim year-round are less likely to become ill than those with a less active lifestyle. Our tips listed below will help you be aware of the little things you can do to keep your child(ren) warm and happy during their cold weather lessons:

1.    Swim Suit. Buy a neoprene wetsuit and make sure it fits snugly. Many people buy with the idea of “growing into it” in mind. If the suit isn’t snug, it defeats the purpose and your child may not be any warmer than they would in a normal suit. You can find kids wetsuits online or in the swim school office any time of the year; just make sure it is neoprene.

2.    Swim Cap. Latex or Silicone are best for trapping the rapid loss of heat through the head. Swim Caps are unisex and cool styles and colors can be found for the more particular kids! The swim school office and online sites are great resources.

3.   Towel. Have you child bring his or her towel to their lesson with them. That way, first thing they can do when they get out is wrap up! Undressing kids poolside and/or allowing them to make the long walk from their lesson station to you without a towel can cause a child to become cold.

4.    Warm Clothes. Make sure to remove all wet items off of your child’s body before putting on dry, warm clothes. Putting clothes on over a wet suit and/or leaving on a cold day in a wet suit is not the best way to warm up your little swimmer.

5.    Hair dryers. Swimming does not cause inner ear infections and drying out the ears can easily prevent swimmer’s ear. If you are blow-drying hair after a lesson, this can thoroughly dry the ears as well. When necessary, using over the counter drying ear drops after lessons eliminates most ear problems.
